"Yakhchal"
The Dome of the 24 century old Yakhchal or cooler (ice pit) holds intriguing patterns of hundreds of mud layers. This structure in Meybod, in central Iran was used to store ice naturally frozen in cold desert nights in winter for use all year long. The Uniquely designed structure had a small opening at the top to ventilate and allow cool air to sink and keep ice cold year round in a very hot region.
